We’re looking for a statistical modeller/data scientist to help us develop existing and new models in our Witan model suite including, our existing Special Education projection model and our upcoming Alternative Provision, Children’s Social Care and Adult Social Care models. Who we are

Mastodon C are a data science company dedicated to bringing our data science skills from industry and academia and applying them to important areas of public life. We provide the skills and create open source models to help our clients realise the potential of their data. We work in particular in applying data to areas where we think we can have a positive impact on the world. Responsibilities

You will act as a data scientist and developer for our existing and upcoming products, applying data science, statistics, open data, and analytics technologies to improve decisions in the public sector. You will also support other data science projects, where we help a variety of clients to solve their business problems by developing data science solutions.

You will in particular be responsible for:

  • Interacting with clients to understand their challenges and goals, while thinking about the broader context of possible solutions, including technical feasibility and ethical implications
  • Thinking through and proposing approaches to solve clients’ modelling problems, by listening to their needs, analysing the available data, identifying possible methods to apply, and working within time and money constraints to suggest the way forwards
  • Working closely with the rest of the team to write and deploy your models – you will be specialising in the data science and statistical elements of our work, but will collaborate with others to integrate your models into a wider codebase
  • Disseminate knowledge around data science and modelling throughout the team
  • Present your results to clients and understand better how we can help them in the future

You will work day-to-day with the software development team, business team, and other data scientists who you will collaborate with to design and implement solutions both within Witan and in other projects.

Who you are

Our ideal person for this role would:

Must Have:

  • Experience of using data science in a professional environment to make valuable business decisions.
  • Be very comfortable with the mathematics of data science, statistics, probability, and random processes. This can be through a degree or through other experience.
  • Have had exposure to a wide range of data science and forecasting challenges, and know the pros and cons of various model approaches
  • Be confident and comfortable writing data science code in at least one language, and happy to learn Clojure, our language of choice. Our team come from a variety of technical backgrounds using Java, Python, R, and other languages.
  • Be keen to learn about new areas of data science and the public sector
  • A proven track record of sharing their knowledge with other members on your team, and keenness to work in a collaborative environment
  • Have good communication skills – able to listen to users and clients and understand their challenges and goals, able to communicate complex structures and models to non-technical users
  • Be interested in and excited about applying data and analytics to important issues in the world

Nice to Have:

  • Have a broad background knowledge of data science approaches, for example machine learning, statistics.
  • Experience of working with senior decision makers.
  • Experience with Bayesian statistics
  • A working knowledge of version control such as git
  • Experience of working in an agile environment
  • Experience in Clojure

Salary and work environment

We are a distributed company with an office in London and employees and associates around the UK. We are happy to discuss part-time arrangements and feel we are particularly good at supporting parents returning to the workforce.

There is some travel to visit clients for meetings to present or research their needs, but no extended time away from home required. We also travel a few times a year in order to get together as a team.

We’re a small and very consultative and interactive team, which means that every member has a big influence on how things run and has a lot of control over the way they work.

The salary for this role is between £45,000 and £50,000 per year. We also do a 5% pension contribution match and a profit related bonus when the company does well.
